Sep 8, 2009—Gladiator Technology Announces New Security Research Department MEDIA RELEASE – Leading Provider of Network and Information Security Solutions Creates Department to Help Financial Institutions Better Respond to Dynamic Security Threats – September 8, 2009 Gladiator Technology, the ProfitStars® solution that operates as a managed security services provider (MSSP) exclusively for financial institutions nationwide, today formally announced its new Security Research Department. This department was created to foster the continued growth and high quality of Gladiator’s network and information security services, and to contribute to the security-related education of its financial institution clients and employees. Danny Johnston, group president of Gladiator Technology, said, “Our Security Research Department is another weapon in our arsenal of security services that help protect financial institutions. This department uses our Malware Network to analyze new attack methods lurking on today’s Internet, and helps facilitate effective response methodologies to proactively protect our clients from these security threats.” The Security Research Department is directed by Ryan Spanier, Gladiator’s senior information security engineer who holds a Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC), as well as certifications from International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, Inc. (ISC2) and Cisco Systems, Inc. The department oversees two strategic internal security groups within Gladiator. The first group is dedicated to enhancing and expanding Gladiator’s current security service offerings, and the second group focuses upon educating employees on the latest security threats and training them on new attack techniques, including how to recognize and protect against attacks. According to Spanier, “Malware threats are evolving every day and Gladiator is not standing by idly. We continue to evolve our services to better protect our clients, and our Security Research Department is an integral part of that protection. The Security Research Department is leading our integration and development of a new malware detection method called Raw Traffic Analysis, or RTA, which is a behavior-based malware detection service for Gladiator’s monitored firewall clients that complements existing signature-based detection methods. Our RTA service is based on the premise that the most dangerous malware sends gathered data to its controllers and/or controls compromised machines, which requires malware to send traffic over the Internet. RTA allows our team to identify malicious traffic by scrutinizing successful outbound connections. If the source of the malware infection is a Web site, Gladiator can pinpoint the exact time, source site, and internal IP address of the malware infection.” RTA has already detected malware activity in more than 57 percent of Gladiator’s client base, which represents more than 400 malware incidents. Most of these infections are on laptops that leave the organization, get infected, and then infect corporate networks. Some examples of the malware variants that Gladiator’s RTA service has successfully detected and helped clean include Conficker, Zbot, Fake Antivirus 2009, Koobface, and Banker-spy. Gladiator keeps its clients and the information security community at large informed on the latest threats and security vulnerabilities via the Gladiator Research and Security Web site. The Security Research Department hosts the Web site – http://research.gladtech.net – where security topics pertinent to financial institution security professionals, such as advisories and blog entries, are regularly posted. In addition to technical security information, articles are posted by members of the Gladiator IT Regulatory Compliance Department regarding new trends in information security compliance relevant to financial institutions.
